About Kigato Banko Yaki technique

This craft, using a special puzzled wooden mould to make tea pots, was invented 190 years ago by a Japanese craftsman Yusetsu Mori (1808-1882). Yusetsu applied the puzzled wood mould technique to make teapots for green tea ceremonies - the technique was once used to make Japanese paper bamboo lamps. In Kigata Banko Yaki, a piece of high quality thinly pressed clay is wrapped around the wooden form, with a layer of Japanese special Kakishibu paper (柿渋紙, made from persimmon juice).

Haruka: 'As the 9th generation successor of the Kigata Banko Yaki, I strive to protect and perpetuate this special technique, and to show and publicise it to the world. In addition to the typical patterns of tea pots in Japanese style, I add creative elements. In doing so, I bring an age-old tradition to today.

Haruka Matsuo

JAPANESE ARTIST HARUKA MATSUO IS THE ONLY PERSON IN THE NETHERLANDS WHO KNOWS THE TRADITIONAL KIGATA BANKO TECHNIQUE. AN AGE-OLD KNOWLEDGE THAT SHE LIKES TO SHARE DURING HER WORKSHOPS AND CONNECTING TEA CEREMONIES.

Artist Haruka Matsuo was born in Tokyo, Japan and grew up in Mie Ken (三重県)

Japan. Both her parents are artists. As the ninth-generaI successor of the traditional Japanese craft "Kigata Banko Yaki (木型萬古焼)", Haruka earned an MA in sculpture from Kyoto City University of the Arts and a BA in textile from De Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.

In 's Gravenland, the Netherlands, Haruka has a garden where she grows flowers and plants to make her own tea for tea ceremonies in the near future. This is in memory of the tsunami on 11 March 2011 in Japan, to help people remember that after an earthquake everything is really gone. And that we all have a responsibility to take good care of the soil.
