Zhengshan Xiaozhong (正山小種)
Zhengshan Xiaozhong and Lapsang Souchong are often considered to be the same tea, but strictly speaking, there is an important distinction.
Zhengshan Xiaozhong is the original black tea from Tongmu, in the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian Province, China. The term Zhengshan refers to the original and authentic production area.
Following the traditional production method, the tea is dried and smoked over pinewood in a special wooden smoking house known as a Qinglou (青楼). This process gives the tea its distinctive pine-smoke aroma and remarkable depth.
Lapsang Souchong is the name by which this style of tea historically became known in the West. Today, however, the term is also used for smoked black teas produced outside the original region. Therefore, a tea labelled “Lapsang Souchong” is not necessarily an authentic Zhengshan Xiaozhong from Tongmu.
This tea comes directly from Tongmu and is traditionally smoked over pinewood. For this reason, we present it as Traditional Zhengshan Xiaozhong (正山小種).
Origin: Tongmu, Wuyi Mountains, Fujian, China
Type: Traditionally smoked black tea
