About the Kigata Banko Yaki Technique
This unique craft, using a puzzled wooden mould to shape teapots, was created 190 years ago by Japanese craftsman Yusetsu Mori (1808–1882). Originally used to make bamboo lamps for Japanese paper, the technique was adapted to create beautiful teapots for green tea ceremonies. The process involves wrapping high-quality, thinly pressed clay around a wooden mould and layering it with special Kakishibu paper (柿渋紙), made from persimmon juice.
Haruka: "As the 9th generation successor of the Kigata Banko Yaki tradition, I am committed to preserving this special technique while sharing it with the world. Alongside traditional designs, I also introduce creative elements, bringing this timeless craft into the modern day."
